If your GEEKOM Mini PC became unresponsive during or after a BIOS or EC firmware update — power light on, fan spinning, but no display and no POST — this article covers the recovery steps and when to request warranty service.
Important: A failed BIOS update that leaves the device unable to boot is called a "brick." Do not attempt repeated power cycles or further BIOS flashing attempts without following the steps below, as this can make recovery harder.
| Symptom | Go to |
|---|---|
| Power light on, fan spins, but no display and no POST after BIOS update | Step 1 |
| USB drive was read during update but device never restarted | Step 2 |
| Device completely dead — no light, no fan after failed update | Step 3 → contact support |
Step 1: Perform a bare-board POST test
Remove all non-essential components to isolate whether the issue is the BIOS chip or a peripheral conflict.
- Disconnect all external devices: monitors, USB drives, keyboards, mice, docking stations.
- If your model has removable RAM, reseat the RAM module firmly.
- Disconnect the power adapter, hold the power button for 30 seconds, then reconnect and try starting.
- Listen for any POST beep codes and watch for any LED activity.
If the device still shows no POST (no display, no beep, no activity beyond power light and fan), proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: CMOS battery reset
A corrupted BIOS state can sometimes be cleared by fully resetting the CMOS.
- Open the bottom cover and locate the CMOS coin-cell battery on the motherboard.
- Disconnect the CMOS battery connector and wait 10 minutes (longer than a standard reset to ensure full discharge).
- Reconnect the CMOS battery, reassemble, and attempt to power on.
- If the device reaches POST or BIOS, immediately select Load Optimized Defaults → F4 to save before doing anything else.
Note: Opening the chassis may not affect your warranty.
Step 3: When to stop and contact support
If the CMOS reset does not restore POST, the BIOS chip itself may be corrupted and requires professional re-flashing with specialized equipment. Do not attempt further DIY recovery steps — additional attempts can make the chip unrecoverable.
A BIOS brick caused by following the official GEEKOM update tutorial is covered under warranty. Contact GEEKOM Customer Service and provide:
- Product model and serial number
- Order number or proof of purchase
- BIOS/EC version you were attempting to install
- Exact step at which the update failed (e.g. "USB drive was read but device never restarted")
- Steps already attempted (bare POST test, CMOS reset)
How to avoid BIOS update failures
- Always use the BIOS file downloaded directly from service.geekompc.com for your exact model.
- Ensure the device is connected to a stable power source throughout the update — do not use battery-powered devices or unreliable outlets.
- Do not interrupt the update process once it has started.
- Follow the official tutorial exactly: https://service.geekompc.com/faq/update-bios-ec/
