If your GEEKOM Mini PC stopped working after a power outage, power surge, or when you heard a "pop" sound when connecting the power adapter, this article covers the steps to diagnose and recover the device.
| Symptom | Go to |
|---|---|
| Completely no response after power outage — no light, no fan | Step 1 |
| "Pop" sound or burning smell when connecting power | Step 2 — stop use immediately |
| Device powers on but overheats or makes loud noise after outage | Step 3 |
| Device was unused for days and now won't start | GK-PWR-01 Branch A |
Step 1: Check and replace the power adapter first
A power surge most commonly damages the power adapter before reaching the device. Always test the adapter before assuming the Mini PC itself is damaged.
- Disconnect the power adapter from both the wall and the Mini PC.
- Inspect the adapter and cable for visible damage — discoloration, melted plastic, or a burning smell.
- If possible, test with a known-good replacement adapter of the same voltage and wattage (check the label on the original adapter).
- If the device powers on with a replacement adapter, the original adapter was damaged by the surge — replace it.
Note: Do not use a third-party adapter with a different wattage rating. Using an underpowered adapter can prevent the device from starting even if the Mini PC itself is undamaged.
Step 2: "Pop" sound or burning smell — stop use immediately
Warning: If you heard a loud "pop" when connecting power, or if there is a burning smell from the device or adapter, do not attempt to power on the device again. Disconnect the power adapter immediately.
Visible burn marks near the DC power port or on the motherboard indicate internal component damage from a surge. This requires professional repair . Contact GEEKOM Customer Service immediately and describe the symptom — do not open the device yourself in this case.
Step 3: Perform a full discharge and CMOS reset
After a power outage, residual charge or a corrupted CMOS state can prevent the device from starting even when power is restored.
- Disconnect the power adapter.
- Remove all external devices: USB drives, monitors, docking stations.
- Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to fully discharge residual power.
- Reconnect the power adapter and try starting the device.
If the above does not work and you are comfortable opening the device:
- Open the bottom cover and locate the small CMOS battery (a coin-cell battery on the motherboard).
- Disconnect the CMOS battery connector and wait 5 minutes.
- Reconnect the CMOS battery, reassemble, and try starting the device.
- If the device starts, enter BIOS (press Del on startup) and reset to Load Optimized Defaults → F4 to save.
Note: Opening the chassis may affect your warranty. Contact GEEKOM Customer Service first if your device is within the warranty period.
Step 4: Use a surge protector going forward
GEEKOM Mini PCs do not include built-in surge protection beyond the power adapter's standard circuitry. To protect against future power events, use a surge-protected power strip or UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) between the wall outlet and the device.
Final Recommendation
If the device still does not power on after completing all steps, internal component damage from the surge is likely. Contact GEEKOM Customer Service and provide:
- Product model and serial number
- Order number or proof of purchase
- Description of what happened (outage, surge, pop sound, burning smell)
- Photos of any visible damage if present
